Karen Drewry
When I recognized that art was truly therapeutic for me, it was at that moment that I found my identity. Through my work, I am able to communicate what triggers my emotions, how I process those emotions; and more importantly, how I process surroundings. I’m compelled to express myself through a combination of media—paint, wood, paper, and fabric which I also use to invoke feelings and emotions from the viewer.
The most important aspect of my work is process and development. Initially, there may be a specific plan of action, but as I’m working on a piece, it may take me in a very different direction based my interaction with the piece. This allows me to break barriers of my own thinking as to what I accept or not. While working, I experience both the struggle to identify the best process, technique and media that will produce the most effective body of work and overcome the conflict of working on very controversial subjects. Nonetheless, I am progressively taking ownership of the message that I want to communicate.”
