We Had the Coolest Friday Morning Visitors! ✨

Friday morning, we had the pleasure of welcoming a wonderful group of 7th-grade students from a Fort Collins school for a morning of art, conversation, and connection.

Their teacher reached out to me several months ago about bringing her students to view the artwork and have an opportunity to speak directly with artists. Her students will be studying the Harlem Renaissance in a few months, and she wanted to give them something beyond what they would find in a textbook—an authentic experience connecting them with Black American artists and their work.

And what a morning it was! 🎨✨

We rotated the students through the exhibition, giving them the opportunity to meet and speak with several of the participating artists. The students asked questions, shared their observations, and learned directly from the people who created the work.

I absolutely loved watching their curiosity unfold.

There is something powerful about giving young people the opportunity to ask an artist, “Why did you make this?” or “What does this mean?” and hear the answer directly from the person who created it.

As they prepare to study the Harlem Renaissance, I hope this experience helps them understand that Black American art is not simply something that belongs in a history book. It is living, evolving, powerful, creative, and being made right here and right now.

A huge thank you to their teacher for being intentional about creating this opportunity for her students—and to all of the artists who took the time to talk with them and answer their questions. ❤️

This is why representation in the arts matters.

Art is education.
Art is history.
Art is conversation.
Art is connection.
Art gives us a chance to see, learn, question, and understand.
